Upon receiving his medical degree from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and completing a postgraduate residency at Roosevelt Hospital, both in Guatemala City, Dr Arredondo finished a radiology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee under the guidance of James E. Youker, MD. Soon after his return to Guatemala in 1980, he joined Francisco Marroquin University and became director of its new radiology residency program. The 4-year program has trained more than 50 radiologists from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

It is through his service with a variety of global radiology organizations that Dr Arredondo has been able to marshal his radiology colleagues around the goal of advancing the specialty in developing countries. In 1986, he presided over the first Central American Congress of Radiology in 15 years, a meeting that also served as the first national Guatemalan Congress of Radiology in 12 years. He has been president of the InterAmerican College of Radiology (CIR 1998-2000) and presided over the 20th  Interamerican  Congress of Radiology and 21st International Congress of Radiology held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2000.

Dr Arredondo said one of his proudest achievements as CIR president was convening regional meetings of radiology in less developed regions of Central and South America and the Caribbean. A few congresses have been realized every year since 2000, often combined with the RSNA Visiting Professor program and supported by radiology organizations in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Spain. Dr Arredondo also remains editor of the CIR Web page he created in 1998.

With CIR service as a springboard, Dr. Arredondo became a member of the executive committee of the International Society of Radiology (ISR) and in 2003 launched a regional radiology development project combining efforts of organizations at all levels to grow the specialty in developing countries, with a special focus on legal and workforce issues. He served as ISR president from 2004 to 2006 and presided over the 23rd International Congress of Radiology in Cape Town, South Africa, in September 2006.

While Dr. Arredondo thanks his colleagues for enabling the largest radiology societies to benefit smaller ones, his colleagues have in return expressed their admiration.  Dr Arredondo received gold medals from CIR in 2002, the Veracruz Radiological Society in 2001, and the Guatemalan Radiological Society in 2000. He is an honorary member of radiologic societies in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Argentina, Cuba, Chile, Italy, and Veracruz, Mexico, and was awarded honorary fellowship in the American College of Radiology in 2005.

A member of RSNA since 1977, Dr Arredondo served on the Committee on International Relations and Education for many years. It is in recognition of his tireless efforts to expand radiology in developing countries  RSNA presented  Dr Arredondo with Honorary Membership 2007.
